BioBright, a Dotmatics company, is creating the smart laboratory of the future driven by the move to data- centric research. Our solutions enable scientists to automate the collection of data from in-house and externally networked sources, and then standardize and analyze that data with validation and integrity checks built in.

We’re building tools that let scientists securely gather and analyze millions of biological datasets and make it all computable. We work with cloud-based data storage, data analytics, computer vision, voice control technology, sensors, and research equipment integrations, enabling organizations to capture and analyze their data up to 65x faster. We empower human researchers at the cutting edge of science. In partnership with leading companies, we facilitate better research and faster development of life-saving therapies.

We are a friendly, diverse group of people sitting at the intersection of biology, medicine, cybersecurity, and computer science, and we’re looking for people who think differently and want to make a dent in important challenges.

The Opportunity:

Scientific Computing Engineer is responsible for building an automation framework and ensuring the quality and reliability of our platform, building various tools needed for simulating customer scenarios and integrating it with automation framework.

  • Reverse engineer data file formats and instrument communication protocols of scientific instruments
  • Write software parsers for file formats and communication protocols using parser combinator frameworks (Nom, PyParsing, Kaitai Struct, etc.)
  • Leverage all available resources to accomplish these goals in low-information contexts (e.g., to decipher undocumented, proprietary file formats)
  • Engage with customers to establish domain-specific product requirements
  • Develop scientific data analyses and visualizations
  • Distill complex scientific concepts into actionable tasks for software development
  • Coalesce specific customer needs into broadly marketable products
  • Partner with Software Engineering and DevOps to implement these parsers and workflows according to best practices in a cloud environment

Skills and Requirements:

  • Have a background in computational biology, biological science, bioinformatics, or a related field with 2+ years of laboratory experience in industry or academia is preferred.
  • Familiar with instruments and methods used in life sciences: For example; FACS, Mass Spec, NMR , UV-Vis, IR spectroscopy, Plate readers, Liquid handlers, Microscopy, High Content Imaging, Sequencing, Chromatography
  • Demonstrated expertise in binary reverse engineering - Hands-on lab experience is helpful to e.g. predict the data structures in an unknown file; but the right candidate can learn this as necessary
  • Have a “reverse engineering mindset” to decipher binary formats/protocols where public domain information is insufficient - For example, leveraging instrument manuals, laboratory experience, self-built tools, and open source software to decipher an unknown format
  • Proficient in programming in a Linux environment using Python, .NET/C#, Rust, Java, etc.
  • Can accomplish high-level research-oriented software development with minimal direction in low-information settings: You will often become the team expert in a particular instrument or workflow on the basis of your research.
  • Excited to learn and synthesize a wide breadth of knowledge and to communicate this to the team.

This role will be based in our Boston office (with flexible working) after government guidance suggests a safe to return to office work. Until that time, this is a remote role.
